Date: Circa 1879
Period: Late Victorian
Maker: T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co.
The naturalistic colouring of the ‘bamboo’ mouldings on this Brown-Westhead, Moore trio of teacup, saucer and bread & butter plate is highly effective, and makes pleasing contrast with the white ground.
A design registration lozenge is found on the bases. The letter-and-number code is for 6thOctober 1873, when Brown-Westhead, Moore registered the shape. The pattern number, C8599, is from slightly later, around 1879.
Condition Generally excellent. Imperfections are a tiny chip on the base rim of plate (see last of the photographs). There are some fine black speckles, from kiln dust or other manufacturing impurities, in the teacup bottom. The bamboo leaves on the saucer have some small patches of missing green enamel, which could date either from manufacturing or later.
