This stylish and fashionable teaset by Brown-Westhead, Moore is several cuts above most late Victorian Japanesque wares. Tropes of European design, like acanthus and rose buds, are painted in an ‘Imari’ palette of red, dark blue and gilt. Unusual pairings lend the set an exotic and arresting appearance.
Novel combination is a hallmark of Brown-Westhead, Moore, one of the most imaginative and underrated English factories in the late 19th Century. The pure white bone china is of a typically high standard, and it is decorated with verve and attention to detail.
The set comprises a handsome teapot with bamboo-shaped handle, a milk jug with a bamboo-shaped handle, three teacups and saucers, a sugar bowl, and a large cake plate.
The bases of most items carry a design registration lozenge for 6 October 1873, and the pattern number F7578. The pattern number on the large plate is K497.
Decoration on the large plate is slightly different to that of the saucers. For instance, the border pattern of the plate incorporates a striped ball. The central design also uses more cobalt blue, and less gilt, and there are subtle differences in shapes and red hatchings.
Condition Perfect, apart from a light brown stain, approximately 1cm long and 1mm-2 mm wide, near the top of the teapot handle. The discolouration is under the glaze.
