Date: Circa 1880
Period: Late Victorian
Maker: T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co
This Brown-Westhead, Moore coffee cup and saucer features a Japanese tree peony on a pale apricot ground, and is a delightful example of ‘Japonism,’ the late 19th Century craze in Europe for Japanese art and design. Tree peonies, called botan in Japanese, were introduced to Japan from China in the 8th Century. They are often depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints and on Japanese cloisonné.
The pattern number, C9176, is painted on the bases. It dates from the height of ‘Japonism’ in England, around 1880.
