This 18th Century Nanking porcelain bowl is hand-painted in blue enamel. The decoration shows typical scenes of Chinese pagoda and other buildings, a traveller crossing a bridge and people fishing in boats. In addition to a stylised willow, a banana tree is also recognisable. The elaborately patterned border along the inside rim includes representations of traditional Chinese roof tiles that were copied in England by New Hall (see our ‘Trench Mortar’ part tea set).
‘Nanking porcelain’ refers to Chinese blue-and-white porcelain made for export during the Qing Dynasty at Jingdezhen and shipped to Europe in great quantity from the port of Nanking (Nanjing).
Condition Excellent. Porcelain tears in the base exterior (see photos) are manufacturing flaws.
