Maker: Linthorpe Art Pottery
Period: Late Victorian
This two-handled vase is one of Christopher Dresser’s iconic designs for the short-lived Linthorpe Art Pottery. Its economy of line and geometric shape anticipate 20th Century Modernism and show his appreciation of the Japanese approach to design. A few years prior to co-founding the Linthorpe pottery, Dresser had spent four months travelling in Japan, and wrote an influential book on the Japanese aesthetic. This shape was produced in a variety of glazes at Linthorpe; the green glaze of this vase is suggestive of celadon ware. The base is clearly impressed with the Linthorpe mark and 957, the shape number.
