Maker: The Royal Porcelain Factory (Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik), Copenhagen
This Blue Fluted Plain teapot dates from soon after Copenhagen’s Royal Porcelain Factory re-launched the famous pattern. It is handmade and hand-painted.
Blue Fluted Plain was the first-ever pattern of the factory after its founding in 1775. The blue flowers are a stylised chrysanthemum, a popular motif of Chinese ceramics, and a cinquefoil, a plant native to the Nordic region. The pattern was further refined by the factory’s artistic director, Arnold Krog, in 1885.
The backstamps allow us to accurately date its manufacture. The crown and DANMARK, stamped in green under the glaze, together with the blue wave mark representing the three main waterways of Denmark, were used together between 1894 and 1900.
Almost all Royal Copenhagen porcelain is now produced in Thailand, except for the Florica Danica range that is still made in Denmark.
