Date: 1800-1810
Period: Regency
Maker: Coalport Porcelain Works (John Rose & Co.)
A remarkable early Coalport dessert plate, possibly outside decorated, dating from 1800-1810.
The formal border of foliate scrolling and flowers within oval and diamond panels is pure Regency and appears identical to that of a Coalport dinner service shown in Plate 13 of Geoffrey Godden’s book Coalport & Coalbrookdale Porcelains. The well of the plate is quite different, however. At the centre is an elaborate star, made up of overlapping leaves, against a backdrop of concentric rings. Around the star are brightly coloured roses, painted in a naturalistic manner. All of the decoration has been done by hand, perhaps at an outside establishment.
The porcelain is of the hard-paste variety, with a slightly greyish hue, typical of early Coalport productions.
Condition Very good-excellent. Minor gilt rubbing and abrasions. A tiny indentation on the rim edge has been gilded over and is a manufacturing flaw (see one of the close-up photographs)
Diameter: 21.3 cm
