Maker: Coalport Porcelain Works (John Rose & Co.)
Period & style: George III, Regency
The plate tells us the blank came from John Rose’s Coalport factory, but the complex decoration has the hallmarks of an independent London studio. The formal Regency design is highly sophisticated. Radiating outwards from the centre is a symmetrical array of gilt anthemions and sinuous acanthus, hand-painted in gold, iron-red and blue. In between the stylised foliage are five ornamental urns, their bodies ‘marbled’ in blue, and with striped conical lids topped with more anthemions. At their base are fanciful bulbs and roots, from which sprouts red acanthus. On the wide border, the acanthus leaves and anthemions are larger in scale than in the well. Minute gilt lines and dots fill many of the spaces.
Condition Good. No cracks or other damage. Marbling on one urn has rubbed and adjacent gilding has very minor rubbing.
