An elegant Derby dessert plate from around 1820, well-painted with a central spray of summer flowers and leaves, as well as three smaller sprays inside tasselled mirror-shaped panels on a dark-blue ground. In between the panels, the border is finely gilded in symmetrical neo-Classical style with flaming torches, acanthus and laurel leaves, and what look like combs and tureen covers. The gilded rim is lobed and gadrooned.
Hand-painted Derby mark in red to base, together with gilder’s mark (‘30’)
Condition Good/very good. Old 3 mm outer rim chip on underside of plate (see close-up photograph), invisible from top. Few tiny spots of rubbed gilt, mainly to band around central reserve. A flower in one border panels has scratching to purple enamel. Typical glaze microcrazing.
