Period & Date: Late Victorian, 1897
Maker: William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
This half-ribbed ‘helmet’-shape creamer by William Hutton is exceptional for its pure elegance of line.
William Hutton began as a silversmith in Birmingham in 1800 and moved to Sheffield in 1832. His company prospered and was able to acquire two other silversmiths and open its own London showroom. Mismanagement eventually led to the bankruptcy of William Hutton & Sons Ltd. in 1930, and its absorption by James Dixon & Sons.
The jug bears London silver assay hallmarks for 1897 and the trademark of William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
