In this striking Regency design by John & William Ridgway, dynamic chequerboards of black and gilt contrast dramatically with chains of soft pastel flowers.
The chains of eight hand-painted flowers in open-sided panels, on the saucer and interiors of the tea and coffee cups, are framed by buff and gilt leaves. At the top junction of the ‘Old English’ handle is a moulded leaf. The pattern number, 2/1111, is painted on the bases.
Condition: Very good. A few faults from manufacture with minimal subsequent wear. Saucer: Very slight scuffing to gilt outer rim, otherwise perfect. Teacup: Very slight rubbing to gilt outer rim and bottom tip of handle. Few specks of glaze impurity from manufacture. Otherwise perfect. Coffee cup: Feint blue streaking on outside of cup in blue specks in bottom, probably from ‘bleeding’ of underglaze blue. Minimal rubbing to gilt edge of top rim. Tiny (1mm or 2mm) firing crack in centre of moulded rosette at upper junction of the handle.
Teacup height: 5.5 cm; rim diameter: 9.4 cm; width, including handle: 11.4 cm Coffee cup height: 6.7 cm; rim diameter: 8.4 cm; width, including handle: 10.3 cm Saucer diameter: 14.5 cm
