Date: circa 1815
Period: Regency
Maker: John & William Ridgway & Sons
A scintillating John & William Ridgway teacup and saucer, decorated with a gilt frieze of stylised cornucopia on an apricot ground. On the saucer and inside the cup there is a gilt acanthus border while pale blue leaves lend an air of exoticism. On close inspection, the apricot ground colour reveals a myriad of tiny dots, presumably applied by hand! The elegant gilt frieze on the outside of the cup echoes the cornucopia, but with leaf fronds in between. Both the bone china and decoration are of superb quality. The pattern number 2/355 is painted on the bases and dates from around there beginning of the John & William partnership at Cauldon Place after their father’s death in 1813. We are also selling a Job Ridgway cup and saucer in the same London shape.
