This stylish Regency sucrier by John & William Ridgway has swirling gilt scrolls and bell-shape panels of summer bright bouquets.
The gently curving sides of the large circular bowl have convex ribs between vertical flutes, and taper from a flange at the top. The flange is gilded on the white with wild roses. The gilded handles form leaves where they join the flange. The ‘Royal’ shape is the same as that of another John & William Ridgway sucrier in our sale collection.
A bold gilt scroll design adorns the underglaze blue ground of the bowl and lid, which both have two bell-shape panels of brightly hand-painted summer flowers. The gilt-edged frames of the panels are straw coloured with gilt dots.
The pattern number, 2/1214, is clearly painted on the base. The pattern dates from around 1815, not long after John and William Ridgway took over the Cauldon Place works on the death of their father Job.
Condition Excellent overall. There is a small area of blemish on the blue and gilt decoration underneath one of the handles, some abrasion near a join of the same handle (see photos), and a tiny amount of gilt rubbing. Other minor faults are all date from manufacture.
