Maker: Meissen
This beautiful late 19th Century Hausmaler (Literally, “home painting”) creamer or milk jug was made at the Meissen manufactory and then decorated at one of the many independent studios in and around Dresden, the nearby capital of Saxony.
The baluster jug stands on three feet shaped like branches or twigs, and there are moulded flower heads and leaves where they join the body. The handle is of similar ‘rustic’ shape with gilt accents. The jug is profusely decorated with hand-coloured wildflowers and leaves, and there is fine gilding below the rim and on the top surface of the spout.
On the base, the two blue crossed swords of Meissen are scratched through twice, denoting that the factory judged the porcelain to be of second quality. We have not found any defect beyond a 3mm surface tear in the porcelain near the upper terminal of the handle.
Condition The post-manufacture condition is generally excellent. There are one or two areas of minor enamel rubbing, only noticeable on close inspection.
