Period: George III
Maker: Minton
Geoffrey Priestman calls this charming early Minton pattern ‘Chinese Family’ in his ground-breaking book, An Illustrated Guide to Minton Printed Pottery, 1796-1836.
A mother is seated with a child on her lap in a Chinese walled garden. Another child is playing with a dog, while a very tall and lanky person, who may be the father, is resting on what is probably a Chinese garden pot. (Priestman notes that ‘the arrangement of the figures is changed when a longer engraving is required,’ and the height of this figure looks somewhat stretched!)
Like all early Minton earthenware, this pearlware saucer has no maker’s mark. Little was known about this class of Minton wares until Priestman wrote his definitive book.
