Maker: Minton
Period: Mid-Victorian
This Minton example of ‘English Imari’ playfully combines elements of Chinese and Japanese design in novel and imaginative ways. It defies easy stereotypes of Victorians as being strait-laced and hidebound puritans!
The pattern number 8055 – painted in tiny script on the bases of cup and saucer – is a variation of Minton’s popular ‘Chinse garden.’ Printed outlines are filled and traced by hand with enamel colour. There are also gilt accents. The fantastic colours and stylised shapes conjure an atmosphere of exotic mystery.
Condition Very good overall. The oval ring of the cup handle has an old hairline that encircles the ring, but the handle is stable. The cup decoration is all in excellent order. The saucer is in very good condition.
