Maker: Minton
Period: Mid-Victorian
This Minton example of ‘English Imari’ playfully combines elements of Chinese and Japanese design in novel and imaginative ways. It defies easy stereotypes of Victorians as being strait-laced and hidebound puritans!
The pattern number 8055 – painted in tiny script on the bases of cup and saucer – is a variation of Minton’s popular ‘Chinese Tree.’ Printed outlines are filled and traced by hand with enamel colour. There are also gilt accents. The fantastic colours and stylised shapes conjure an atmosphere of exotic mystery.
Condition Very good overall. The cup is in VG condition, with only some minor gilt rubbing along the rim. Some inky smudging from the cobalt blue running during decoration. The saucer is VG with minor gilt rubbing along the rim edge.
