Date: 1859
Period: Mid Victorian
Maker: Minton
The real showstopper of this arresting Minton dessert plate is its unusual border. The printed and hand-painted wild roses in the centre are certainly attractive, but the eye is inevitably drawn to the moulded and interwoven garlands which also form the scalloped rim. One strand is a gold-ground garland of pink rose buds and green leaves, the other is a gilt-edged string of gilt ovals and dots.
On the base is the impressed Minton date cipher for 1859. An impressed ‘N’ is for November, and ‘V’ is the potter’s mark. An impressed design registration lozenge is too indistinct to be legible. There is also an old collector’s label.
CONDITION Excellent, almost perfect. Close inspection reveals a few surface glaze abrasions, and a few tiny spots of gilt rubbing to rim edge.
