Maker: Minton
Period: Mid-Victorian
These elegant Minton mid-Victorian teawares are finely ribbed and have moulded pairs of turquoise cabuchons inside gilded borders. The part tea set comprises five cups and saucers, two serving dishes for cakes or sandwiches, and a slop bowl.
The twin dishes are beautifully shaped and proportioned, with gently curved rims and moulded handles.
All of the bases bear either impressed or printed lozenges, with codes for shapes registered by Minton on 13 April 1850. There is also a painted pattern number, A1964. Minton started its ‘A’ prefix series on 19 November 1850.
The part set makes an interesting comparison with our Minton ‘Paris flute’ sucrier produced a decade earlier.
Condition The slop bowl is in mint condition. One serving dish is excellent, with just minuscule rubbing to the thin gilt band around the central well. The other dish has a little more rubbing to the gilt band around the well, and light rubbing to the X-shaped gilt decoration on the handles. One saucer has star crack in the base. The other four saucers have either light rubbing to gilt circle around well, or to the edge trim. The cups are VG/excellent. There are a few patches of rubbing to the geometrical gilt pattern around the rims.
