Period: Regency
Maker: New Hall Porcelain Works
The decoration on this famous New Hall pattern 446 is commonly called ‘Imari Vine’ but the gnarled trunk and branches with their orange-red berries are more likely those of a mulberry tree, or maybe a bonsai. To add to the confusion, the feathery leaves hanging from the rim look more like willow!
Delicate hand-painting and gilding adds to a dreamlike atmosphere. The shading on the dark-blue tree is achieved with fine gilt hatching, and most of the leaves are composed of thin veins and minute dots.
Condition Signs of restoration to inner rim. Some gilt rubbing to lip edge and handle. Enamels in good order.
