Period: Late Victorian, circa 1895
Maker: George Jones & Sons
The decoration on this pair of ‘Madras Ware’ vases by George Jones evokes the sultry and mysterious atmosphere of southern India. The flowers sometimes appear dusky and half-hidden, as if behind a veil, only to burst into life under strong light.
The baluster-shaped vases are hand-painted with what appears to be clematis, a climbing vine with dark leaves and red flowers, on a mustard-ochre ground. The shoulders are moulded in Japanese style like the spreading petals of a chrysanthemum. The petals sweep upwards towards the centre, forming a narrow neck below an everted lip.
The bases are printed in black with ‘Madras Ware’ and ‘England’ above a monogram and crescent mark for George Jones & Sons.
Condition One vase is in excellent condition. The other has a small repaired rim crack in the neck.
