This 18th Century Nanking porcelain ribbed dish is skilfully hand-painted in blue enamel. In the foreground is a Chinese temple. In the distance are islands and mountains. The edge of the rim appears to be painted with mustard-coloured enamel, perhaps to imitate gilding.
‘Nanking porcelain’ refers to Chinese blue-and-white porcelain made for export during the Qing Dynasty at Jingdezhen and shipped to Europe in great quantity from the port of Nanking (Nanjing).
Condition Excellent. No damage, and the only sign of wear are tiny surface abrasions, only visible on close inspection when held up to the light. A couple of porcelain tears and a glaze crack on the base exterior (see photo) are manufacturing flaws.
