Period: George III
Maker: Worcester Porcelains (Flight period)
This Flight Worcester dessert bowl in the Royal Lily pattern has a shape we have not come across before.
The ovoid bowl has a narrow handle formed from a moulded lip, protruding slightly from the scalloped rim and edged in iron red.
It was made during Worcester’s Flight Period (1783-1792), when the factory was owned by Thomas Flight. The base has a blue painted open crescent, a factory mark used during this period. There are also two old labels.
The bowl is painted in underglaze blue with the lily pattern. In 1788, King George III and Queen Charlotte attended the Worcester Music Meeting. The royal couple also toured Flight’s Worcester factory, and ordered a breakfast service in the Blue Lily pattern which was renamed ‘Royal Lily’ in Charlotte’s honour.
Condition Very good. Roughly half of the base area appears unglazed, a manufacturing fault. Minor rubbing to sections of the gilt flower panelled diaper bands around the rim, and very slight rubbing to the iron red edge.
