This stunning hand-made and hand-cut Regency Irish glass vase is suggestive of the Cork Glass Company. The ‘turnover’ rim is very characteristic of Irish glass. It is sharply cut with diamonds repeated on the lower body. Above the band of diamonds on the lower body are flat broad flutes, below it is another band of narrower flutes. The central stepped ‘bobbin’ on the stem is also faceted, while the bottom of the round base is star-cut. Phelps Warren wrote in his book Irish Glass that similar diamond cutting on the turnover rim and lower body with flat fluting “suggests” the Cork Glass Company, in operation from 1783 to 1818.
The steely tinge is typical of Irish glass of this period and is the result of the heavy lead content.
