Period: Late Regency
Maker: Minton
This eye-catching Minton creamer from around 1827-30 has stylish elegance and bold design flair.
The creamer is a scarce example of what Minton called its ‘French shape B.’ It stands on the three moulded feet, topped by moulded and gilt-edged palmettes flanked by acanthus. The everted and flared lip has an undulating rim, and the top and bottom sections of the elaborate looped handle are formed of moulded acanthus.
Stylised tree blossoms painted on a cream ground provide a dramatic pattern. Tree blossom appears on the inside of the lip, including the spout, on the front and both sides of the belly.
The pattern number, 886, is painted in red on the base. We are also selling a companion coffee cup and saucer.
A Minton ‘French shape B’ creamer in a different pattern is Plate 859 on Page 144 of A Cabinet of British Creamers by Michael Berthoud. In his book Minton Pottery & Porcelain of the First Period, 1793-1850, the late Geoffrey Godden reproduced drawings of the French shape B in a Minton shape-book that bore a watermark for 1827.
