Period: Late Regency
Maker: Minton
This eye-catching Minton coffee cup and saucer from around 1827-30 combines stylish elegance with bold design flair. The graceful profile of the cup and handle is in what Minton called its ‘French shape B,’ examples of which are quite scarce. The dramatic pattern consists of stylised tree blossoms painted on a pale apricot ground. In the middle of the saucer there is an intricate gilt medallion.
The pattern number, 886, is painted in red on the bottoms of the cup and saucer. We are also selling a companion creamer.
In his Minton Pottery & Porcelain of the First Period, 1793-1850, the late Geoffrey Godden reproduced drawings of ‘French shape B’ in a Minton shape book watermarked for 1827.
Condition Excellent. The saucer is almost perfect. Close inspection reveals some light surface abrasions, but these are hard to detect. The cup has a minimal amount of gilt rubbing to the rim edge and top of the handle.
