This is a rare pair of hand-made and hand-cut Irish Regency ‘turnover’ glass salts, possibly by the Cork Glass Company. The ‘turnover’ rim is very characteristic of Irish glass. It is sharply cut with diamonds repeated in a band on the lower body of the bowl. Above this lower band is another band of flat rectangular flutes. The stem is of rounded bobbin shape and the bottom of the square pedestal base is cut with a star. Phelps Warren wrote in his book Irish Glass that similar diamond cutting on the turnover rim and lower body with flat fluting “suggests” the Cork Glass Company, in operation from 1783 to 1818.
The two footed bowls are taller and wider than typical Regency cut-glass salts, and one is slightly taller and narrower than the other.
Condition Excellent. No damage or signs of wear beyond the usual surface scratching on the bottoms.
