Maker: Josiah Spode
Period: Regency
This rare early Spode coffee can & saucer combines playful exuberance with formal complexity. The brightness and airiness of simple flowers, with gilt fronds forming arches between baskets, is identical to Spode’s 424 pattern, but is used this time to form a perfect contrast with a border of dense gilt scroll work on a cobalt-blue ground.
The can is of Bute shape, which Spode introduced around 1800 and remained in production until around 1818.
The can and saucer are unmarked except for an old collector’s label. George Warlock was a keen British collector of Spode and Copeland ceramics.
Condition Good. No damage or restoration. The can has gilt rubbing along the rim edge. The saucer has some gilt rubbing in the well and along the rim edge, and light surface scratching.
