Period: Regency
Maker: Coalport Porcelain Works (John Rose & Co.)
The ‘English Imari’ decoration on this Regency Coalport teapot is stylish and accomplished. The condition is almost perfect.
Both gilding and enamelling are of a high standard. The hand-paintings, of abstract flowers and leaves, employ the full Imari palette and are skilfully balanced and executed. The imaginative design has a freshness and vivacity often missing from mass-produced ‘Imari’ teawares. Note the care and attention to detail that has gone into decorating around the bottom of the handle. On the right side, there is even a large flower not repeated elsewhere.
The spout and the handle have white acanthus on a gold ground, a classical exception to the Imari repertoire. Both the shoulder of the pot and the border of the cover have formal gilt patterns on cobalt blue ground.
The pattern number, 692, is painted on the base.
CONDITION Excellent. Minor gilt rubbing to the tip of the finial, to the top edge and the moulding crease of the handle. Otherwise, almost perfect.
On the top surface of the handle, tiny black speckles on the white acanthus are impurities from manufacture.
Length, from tip of spout to edge of handle: 25 cm; Height: 14.3 cm
