Maker: Josiah Spode
Period: Regency
This early Spode trio is influenced by Romanticism. The teacup and saucer are painted in sepia with wild landscapes that evoked for Romantics the unstoppable power of Nature.
Spode introduced the pattern, number 382, in 1802. Landscape subjects differ. Painting in black is more common than in sepia.
Condition The cups are in good condition. A couple of light scratches to the sepia on the teacup. The painting on the saucer has multiple fine scratches from being scraped by a cup. The gilt bands along the rim are also worn in places.
