Maker: Josiah Spode
Period: Regency
The hand-decoration of this stunning Spode saucer dish is a sophisticated Regency tour de force. Between stylised, Imari-inspired white and gilt-edged daisy heads, which stand out perfectly against the cobalt blue ground, is a dazzling display of master gilding. The intricate web of scrolling leaves manages to appear writhingly alive while being perfectly balanced. The cavetto acts as a horizontal axis of scaled symmetry. Below, in the well, the pattern is identical but diminished in size. The pattern is also vertically aligned between the flower heads.
There is no maker’s mark, but the pattern number, 892, is painted by hand on the base. Spode 892 is much scarcer than the outwardly similar 893 pattern that came immediately after in 1805.
Condition Excellent. A few spots of miniscule gilt rubbing and scratches, visible only on close-up inspection.
