A superb quality 18th Century Nanking porcelain ribbed dish, potted and hand-painted at Jingdezhen and then ‘clobbered’ in Europe with two gilt bands.
The painting combines crisp detailing with delicate artistry, and the enamel paint is skilfully applied to vary the tonal depth.
In the foreground is a Chinese temple complex. Two people are talking in a garden, and two travellers are crossing a bridge. On the distant horizon is a pagoda.
Condition Excellent. No damage. The only visible wear is some miniscule gilt rubbing to a tiny section of the rim.
‘Nanking porcelain’ refers to Chinese blue-and-white porcelain made for export during the Qing Dynasty at Jingdezhen, and shipped to Europe in great quantity from the port of Nanking (Nanjing).
